Five
5 is the fifth album of Maak’s Spirit. Simple, no?! 5 is a jazz album…
In the winter of 2006 the six musicians of Maak’s Spirit gathered round a new repertoire of fifteen songs written by the guitarist Jean-yves Evrard. The ideas and the mood were definitely already there, but sounds still had to be discovered, shapes modeled and themes explored… But there is more to music than meets the eye. Having good ideas and a lot of motivation isn’t enough to create.
Since poetry is like a lighthearted child that likes to play hide and seek, she’s like an unpredictable teasing woman who can not be seduced and then suddenly, unexpectedly … just appears at your side.
On the 19th, 20th and 21st of February the musicians of Maak’s Spirit withdrew to a small studio in an even smaller town in Belgium. This idyllic place created a special atmosphere for the musicians and especially for the music. The cymbals softly caress the neck of the double-bass, the fender’s amplifier murmurs gently to the trumpet, the tenor and drums fight over the microphone. Assembling these original sounds could have been impossible, but it was nonetheless a great experience for Maak’s Spirit. The fusion of specific sounds, good ideas, supremely motivated musicians and just a pinch of the unexpected transformed 5 into a powerful and complex album.
Everything of this album – aromas, light, metals – breathes the sound of a slow autumn. A couple of days later a spring breeze would have been in the air. 5 would have been another child. Or would’t it? Who can tell, … it’s a jazz album and that’s what it is.
