Mâäk Quintet

Mâäk Quintet is one of Belgium's longest existing and most active avant-gardist jazz collective. Their compositions are always steeped in trance and influenced by diverse artistic encounters bringing each concert to another dimension.

Born in the mid '90's as a classic jazz quartet around trumpettist Laurent Blondiau, the ensemble has become an international collective with adventurous musicians. The Mâäk Quintet is the core of the collective and the starting point of all other main projects: MikMâäk (big band), Ghalia Benali & Mâäk : MwSOULKawral (project with European musicians and dancers from Ouagadougou), Mâäk Electro, Mâäk 7tet, Kojo (encounter with musicians, dancers and voodoo singers from Benin), …

The quintet presents original compositions influenced by its diverse artistic encounters. This collaboration with musicians coming from totally different cultures, gives the music a new dimension. Because aside the improvisation common to jazz, you can sense the origins of its whole tradition.

This group never slips into a routine and renews itself constantly. Everything is centered around vitality, dynamism and musical freedom in a clearly defined framework. The music is sophisticated, fascinating, magnetic, sensual. The musicians always look for new sonic, rhythmic and harmonic possibilities, and thus show that jazz can be synonymous for freedom, progress, discovery and adventure!
